Reflections on reflections
Du Fu considers the things that pass in front of our eyes
Six Short Poems (6) Du Fu The river The stream moves is an illusion the moonlight of clouds moves and flowers the rocks together The birds A sail come to roost goes by they know to sleep at whose home the way home I wonder? 杜甫 绝句六首·其六 江动月移石，溪虚云傍花。 鸟栖知故道，帆过宿谁家。
The last in this series is the most complex. The first couplet has us looking at the surface of the river, and considering its motion, the reflections, its changes over the course of a day, and finally the way all of this has been reflected in a poem. The second couplet sees things moving past Du Fu, either to certain homes, or to places unknown. The unspoken connection between these two couplets is powerfully suggestive. The images that flow past us may go to places of certainty - into our memories, or into our understanding - or to places unknown - forgotten, or never understood.
Of course, this is only one interpretation. This short verse has remarkable depth. If you plunge in, you may well surface with quite different ideas.
