Yellowface by R F Kuang is great
I like it as much as her other books, and that's saying something
At the end of The BFG, we get this revelation:
But where, you might ask, is this book that the BFG wrote?
It's right here. You've just finished reading it.
The text of the book is attributed to one of the characters in the book.
One of the great pleasures of Yellowface is, as the end of the book approaches, trying to guess whether the same thing will happen. It’s a book about writers, and any number of them could end up being labelled the putative author. The main character is one obvious possibility, but Kuang also obliquely suggests the text could be the product of a couple of other different writers - including some kind of beyond-the-grave ghost author. As the book rushes to a climax, this whowroteit mystery was totally absorbing for me. It’s a very intellectual game: what genre of book is Kuang going to slot herself into, and how will my response to the book as a reader be affected? It feels very detached and dissociated. But it’s so much fun that I was chuckling all through the last few chapters.
