People who others admire for their wealth, status, and physical appearance may seem confident, but are very insecure. They know who they truly are isn't those impermanent assets. That's why Chan Buddhist poets took themselves to the wild mountains and streams.

It is perhaps no coincidence that Chan Buddhism developed so strongly during the Tang Dynasty. The strength of the dynasty created the conditions for literature to flourish; and it also created the time and space for people to think more deeply about what was truly important.

The Hard Road to Walk title was in fact adopted by Buddhist writers during this period. I'm trying to read up on it and understand it properly before I put up more translations. It's fascinating history.
